I woke up this morning and I wondered what has happened to PHP’s new version slated to be released around the end of this year 2015. What a geeky first thought of the day.
Oh, has it been already released? It seems to be.

It is a logic that I want to try the latest PHP 7.0 on my mac OSX El Capitan to see how it works with WordPress. As you might have heard buzz on the net on the incredible 2x speed boost of WordPress along with the advent of PHP 7.0. (See this article for example)
You might find the following article quite handy and useful in updating your Mac’s local php versions to 7.0.

There are few additional useful tips to be kept in mind.
- You might want to add a line of export PATH=”$(brew –prefix homebrew/php/php70)/bin:$PATH” to .bash_profile or .bashrc file. I added to .bash_profile on mine.
- I bet you will see a file index list when you access to the top page of your local WordPress site. To fix this, double check dir_module / DirectoryIndex line of your httpd.conf. This post may be useful.
How is your WordPress on PHP 7.0 working on your mac so far?
The speed performance is seemingly better than before. My theme is working well so far. I will keep on developing on this mac to ensure compatibility with the upcoming standard platform. My comment on PHP 7.0 is not really either inspiring or helpful? Try on your own.
Are those web hosting services supporting PHP 7.0 yet?
Not that I know of. But we as developer better start preparing for the new transition and migration process. Try on your own.
So what do you expect will happen when PHP 7.0 becomes widely available?
Say, as speed performance of php is drastically boosted, it might perhaps give some advantages over other solutions. There are still pros and cons or strengths and weaknesses on each platform. Furthermore you never know if WordPress will still be using PHP for the next decade. It might be using others like node.js. You never know.
If the advent of new PHP 7.0 indicated an initiation of speed performance boost race among those platforms, oh well, we better start day dreaming about what we can do otherwise we had not been able to do without the speed boost. Now going to siesta.
